Using Filler Flowers To Accentuate A Floral Arrangement

Arranging flowers is an art, but that doesn't mean that it can be done completely randomly.  Even art has a process.  What would a great artist be without their paints, for instance?  In flower arrangement, one of the “paints” is filler flowers.

Filler flowers are to flower arranging what backup singers are to a musical artist.  They're a very necessary part of most arrangements, but they shouldn't be the main focus of an arrangement at all.  In fact, some arrangements don't really require filler flowers.

What Are Filler Flowers:

floral arranging, flower arrangement, floral arrangement, flower arranging Filler flowers are usually defined as bushy or cluster flowers.  They usually consist of a straight stem with a bunch of small flowers all along it.  The idea of this bushiness is to fill in gaps in a floral arrangement.  That makes the arrangement look fuller.

The Object Of Filler Flowers:

The object of using filler flowers in a flower arrangement is just as the name implies.  That is, filler flowers fill in blank space in an arrangement.  They do more than just that, though.  They add body to a piece and help to direct a person's eye towards the larger flowers that are the main focal points of the piece.

Filler flowers can also be used to add colors or shapes to a piece.  Sometimes you might want to use similar colors in different shades.  In other arrangements, though, it may make more sense to use a completely different color.  A lot has to do with what you wish to accomplish within the flower arrangement.

Filler Comes Last:

The basic idea of filler flowers is just to add a little something special to a flower arrangement. Whether body or color, they can add a lot to a piece.  However, don't let them take over your piece. They aren't meant to be the main attraction.

The best way to make sure that your filler flowers don't overtake your piece is to add them in last and only when necessary.  If you have a lot of blank spaces, you can add a few filler flowers to bulk up the piece.  If not, just let the piece stand in its own right.

Also, it's important to make sure the filler flowers are mainly somewhat behind or below the main attraction.  They shouldn't be major components of the foreground.  They also shouldn't be taller than your featured flowers.

Flowers That Qualify As Fillers:

There are many flowers that qualify as filler flowers.  Larkspur, statice and baby's breath are a few of them.  Others include hypericum berries, asters and wax flowers.  Those are just some of the options, when it comes to filler flowers.

The point of filler flowers is to accomplish the specific task of rounding out a piece. However, just because the task is specific doesn't mean the execution has to be done a certain way.  There are many different types of filler flowers, as you can clearly see.  So, it's important to use a lot of creativity and imagination, as you choose how to make the most of filler flowers in a floral arrangement.  That way, you'll be sure to create a unique and fun work of floral art.
