 Fun Facts About Roses

There are many fun facts to explore about roses.

Roses have been used for centuries and in different cultures as gifts and floral designs. Why are red roses given as a sign of love and has it always been that way?  Exploring some of the fun facts about roses is another way to increase our awareness of the art of floral design and the gift of flowers to the ones we love.

Abraham Lincoln said, "We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses."

A rose is known as an ancient symbol for love and beauty.  Did you know that it is the national flower for the United States? The ancient Greeks and Romans identified the rose with their goddesses of love referred to as Aphrodite and Venus respectively. In Rome a wild rose would be placed on the door of a room where secrets and confidential matters were being discussed.  Early Christians identified five petals of the rose with the five wounds of Christ. Rose water or rose perfumes are made by steam distillation of the petals to obtain rose oil. One of the oldest meanings of the word rosary was "a rose garden."  Rosaries were made up of dried rose hips or rosewood.

A woman named Rose.

Rose O'Neal Greenhow was the name of a very famous female spy for the Confederacy who was both beautiful and wealthy.  She had a daughter named Rose who spent time with her mother in 1862 at Old Capital Hill Prison. Rose's daughter, who known as Little Rose was only eight years old at the time.  The name Rose for a baby girl originated in Germany. Having been in use since the early 1900's, it is a variation of Rosalyn, which was ultimately derived from the medieval name "Rosalin."

Symbolism that has been attributed to the colors of roses.

Red: Love, courage, and respect.

Red & White Together: Unity and togetherness.

Light Pink: Grace, sophistication, and elegance.

Dark Pink: Gratefulness, appreciation.

White: Innocence, purity, secrecy, friendship, reverence, humility.

Yellow: Joy, deep friendship.

Black: Death (black being the color of death). It also is for rebirth after death

The rose comes in many colors, fragrances, and sizes.  It has been used for many centuries by different cultures for floral designs, symbolism, religious practices, and is mentioned throughout Mythology.  It plays a significant role even in today's society in floral design and as gifts.  Has a red rose always been a sign of love? The answer would have to be a definite yes.  There is even mention in the bible of roses and of several uses for them. Needless to say, roses have been around since people took interest in the nature around them and set out to use them to beautify their surroundings. We should all take the time to stop and smell the roses

Exotic Flower Arrangements

When we think of flowers that we are most familiar with, many of us think of amaryllis, gardenias, tulips, or even orchids. These are all actually classified as exotic flower types
however. Even though there are some varieties of these grown in the United States, they are still listed as exotics. There are numerous types of exotics now available for purchase worldwide, and they make beautiful floral arrangements. If these appeal to you, then there is a wide choice of options to consider. The rich, vibrant colors are one of the deciding factors in choosing your arrangement.

One thing that always stands out about exotic floral arrangements is the wide color range that is available. Most exotics are amazingly bright and stand out quite well when placed in the right setting. People will readily comment on them, as they seem to be able to draw attention from just about everyone. Pictures of these flowers that are seen online or in print cannot really do them justice. You must see them in person to really enjoy and appreciate their beauty. Not even the best photographer can catch the essence of their grace and elegance.

Exotic floral arrangements not only look great when you buy them. It has been proven that exotic flowers last longer than other types of fresh flowers. This means that they will be around for much longer than other floral arrangements.  When
caring for your arrangement, there is one important thing to remember. Watering the exotic arrangement is extremely important. Just filling it up will not suffice however. You must take the time to actually change the water once every two or three days. This will help to insure the arrangements longevity.

Another consideration for your arrangement is the variationsyou may achieve when putting it together or when ordering one from a florist. While they are full of color, by mixing them together with other exotics of varying type and color you can get a much more dramatic effect. If you are having trouble deciding which types would be right together then definitely ask a florist. They will have no problem taking the time to point you in the right direction.

Today there is a world of options when ordering flowers on the Internet. It has brought the exotic flowers of the world within reach of those who would have never been able to experience their beauty and deep scents before. Exotics are availablechoose from for making a floral arrangement. Exotics are very interesting and make excellent topics of conversation when having a small get together in your home. They can also make your home feel more inviting and comfortable for you and your guests
from a wide variety of sources. When deciding, make sure that you know what décor you are trying to complement or what occasion you are trying to buy for. It is likely that your local florist may have a selection of exotics to.
