Form and Mass Flowers

In flower arrangements, there are several different types of flowers that are needed to achieve a desired result.  Form and mass flowers, for example, have unique qualities that enhance an arrangement.  So, let's look at what those qualities are and how to work best with them.

Form Flowers:

Think of form flowers as adding form to a design.  Form flowers give your design shape and substance. They often help to draw the attention of the viewer a bit.

Form flowers tend to be unique, so the instinct is to use a lot of them to create a unique arrangement. Fight the urge, though.  The true idea of a form flower is to add just a little flair to a design.  One or two form flowers really can accomplish the desired effect.  There's no need to go overboard with them

Another reason not to go overboard with form flowers is, quite simply, that form flowers tend to be expensive.  If you don't need more than a couple of them, it's better not to spend too much on too many.

Some great types of form flowers include protea and lilies.  Birds of Paradise are one of the most popular types, too.  There are many options available, though.  So, be sure to do some research, when choosing one.

Mass Flowers:

Mass flowers are very aptly named.  That's because their biggest job is to create mass within a floral arrangement.  Mass flowers are often both round and colorful, which has caused them to be nicknamed “face flowers”.  Also, they usually consist of a long, straight stem with one large flower.

Some of the best mass flowers are daffodils and tulips.  Irises, sunflowers and chrysanthemums are also examples of mass flowers.  Any of those can add a lot of body and plenty of color to an otherwise drab floral arrangement.

Unlike form flowers, mass flowers can and should be used in ample amounts.  In fact, it's important to use different colors and heights of mass flowers to really give an arrangement substance.  You can also add to the creativity by putting the flowers in at different angles and by using more than one type of mass flower.

Form and Mass Flowers Together:

You can actually choose not to use form flowers in a piece.  Every piece really needs mass flowers, though.  Not having any would be like not having a main dish at a family dinner.  It just won't work.

If you choose to use both form and mass flowers, good for you!  That can add even more substance to a piece.  The point of flower arranging, after all, is to use a wide variety of plants and flowers to create a fun and appealing floral design.

In short, using various types of flowers is like using various colors to paint.  A painting done all in black can have some merit.  A painting done in a wide variety of colors and utilizing various images and shapes is a lot more interesting. Floral arranging is the same way.
