A Close Call This Week

On Monday, 4/27/09 we had a really good scare in our community. I live in a wooded area and most the lots are 1 acre or more. Anyway, one of the homeowners smelled smoke and low and behold a fire indeed had started in a field near them. During this time I was inside working on the computer when I heard sirens and thought oh, no one of our neighbors had taken a turn for the worse and was being taken to the hospital. I called one of my neighbors to find out what had happened and found out that instead a fire was engulfing some of the properties on their side of the complex. By the time it was all done, we had 50 acres of our community burned by the brush fires. (We were very fortunate that the fires remained near the ground and had not gotten up high into the tree tops.) The next day I went out with hubby to see what had actually happened and the area looked like a battle zone. I could not believe all the damage that was done to the land. Thank the Lord that no homes were burned, even though the fire did come to within 30 feet of a few. Now I have a good understanding of the devastation fire can do, even if it was small compared to what happens on the West Coast. My heart goes out to all those folks that have lost everything they had in such a manner. I have included some photos of the area for all you to see. My hat is off to the men and women who fight these fires, Thank You for saving our Community.

Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

Mother’s Day is a special time for mom. She works hard to make sure that you and everyone else is happy throughout the year. But what about her? Doesn’t she deserve a day devoted all to her, so she can feel extra special? After all, she is your mother. Since Mother’s Day comes year after year, it often seems to get harder and harder to figure out what to get her with each passing year. You definitely do not want to get her the same thing as you got her last year, and you also do not want to get her the same exact thing as someone else might be getting for her. Here are some Mother’s Day gift ideas to help you along your way:

1. Create your own handmade flower arrangement. What better way than to say I Love You Mom than with a floral arrangement you made. This can be done for very little cost. You can even use containers from around the house. An old bucket, a watering can even an old shoe (just be sure to use a waterproof insert), a few of many items that you can use for a container. Now fill it up with Mom’s favorite flower or flowers. You now have an inexpensive Mother’s Day gift. Use your homemade card from item 3 below and you are all set.

2. Have a portrait made together. She will absolutely love this. There is nothing more dear to a mother than her children. You can also buy her a nice outfit for the family photo together. Tell her that she can keep the outfit and wear it anytime that she wants. After getting your picture made together, get a nice frame to put it in, and give it to your mom for Mother’s Day.

3. Make her a card. This does not mean getting a regular piece of construction paper and some crayons and writing: “I love you mom, happy Mother’s Day” on the card. Unless you are four years old, you need to take some time and really make an unforgettable masterpiece out of your homemade card. Get some old pictures of you two together and glue them to the card. Try going out to a craft store and getting some special glue-on designs and artsy stickers. You could also try to add some pizazz to your card by gluing things like buttons, flowers, and cute, cut out pieces of fabric to the card. Once you have made your card, your mom will never forget the beauty and thought that has been invested into it.

4. Mother’s Day only comes one time a year, so you should make it one that she will never forget by buying her a couple of gift cards to her favorite shops. A girl has got to shop! 5. Go all out with the classic box of chocolates and bouquet of flowers. You cannot go wrong with this gift idea – never. Unless you got the same thing last year, this is an idea that is a winner every time. Even if you did get this for her last year, you can always spice it up by adding an extra gift that is not like anything else that you have gotten for her in the past.

6. Get her a custom made gift basket. You can locate gift basket retailers virtually everywhere online. They usually carry things like specialty chocolates, coffees, soaps, lotions, perfumes, gardening supplies, spices, recipe books. Basically all of the nifty little treats that moms love. You cannot go wrong with a gift basket, be sure to throw in a card and you will have the perfect Mother’s Day gift.

No matter what you choose to get for your mother, just make sure it is something as special as she is, and from the heart. This Mother’s Day needs to be the best one yet, and we should all strive to show our moms how important and appreciated they really are. Bad Night Last Night

My poor sore hubby. Last night was not too good for him. I asked him to please go out and get the mail from the mail box, since I had never bothered earlier in the day, and he graciously offered. Little did I know the terrible consequences of my request. It was about 9 PM when I asked him to go out. I never realized it had been drizzling rain out a sort of misty type drizzle. Anyway, it was also cold enought to create what we call “black ice”. The type that makes the pavement just look like it’s wet, but it’s actually pure ice. Well, he took that first step on the first stair and his foot went right out from under him and down the cement steps he went, all 8 of them. He painfully got himself up and still walked the 100 yards to the mailbox and back. (Bless his heart.) He managed to get back into the house, I got him to sit down and we rubbed his back up good with some muscle rub.

Today, needless to say, he is pretty sore and thankfully no broken bones. I’m ordering him to bed rest to get that back to feeling better. Later today we found out that a section of the main highway had been closed during the night because of the icing conditions and a 17 car pile-up that occurred not far from the house. I’m just glad I did not have to drive in that weather last night and take him to the emergency room, we probably would never have gotten there.
