A great deal of pain accompanies the death of someone you love. Words are really not adequate to describe the hurt involved. Nevertheless, it is important to express sympathy for people going through the grieving process. Although your words can’t erase their pain completely, they can help. When you empathize with someone who is experiencing such sorrow, it can at least help them cope with the situation.

A big part of the immediate healing process revolves around what you can do to make the family of the lost loved one cope and deal with the loss. There are many different ways this can be done and they involve expressing your condolences by way of both verbal and material gestures.

One of the biggest material gestures that one can do in the immediate future is the gift of funeral flowers. It is always a good idea to order sympathy flowers from a trusted florist. There can never be a shortage of sympathy flowers when one passes. This is not to say that flowers are the only thing one can use to show their support for the family.

A gift basket, showing sympathy, might also be a good choice. It could include a number of things: chocolates, a decorated diary, perhaps photographs of the deceased in better times. Such things can go a long way to help people cope. Seeing the deceased in happy times goes a long way to turn sorrow into better thoughts.

The material gestures are nice, and certainly appropriate and even necessary, but we must also not forget the simple verbal gestures. Reaching out to help the family in any way possible can go a long way. Whether it be an offer to bring over dinner, giving a younger child a ride to or from sports practice, or even doing their laundry, I can assure you that the gesture will make the families’ life a lot easier during the most painful of times.

Because there is so little that anyone can do to ease the grief of losing someone we love, we often turn to expressions of sympathy such as funeral florals or sympathy gift baskets. When we order sympathy flowers, we hope that the bright colors and soothing scents of the blossoms will somehow lesson the heavy hearts and sadness felt by the friends and family of the deceased. These baskets also provide an opportunity to tuck in pictures or other mementos of the deceased.
