Send Flowers: The History of a Beautiful Tradition

July 6th, 2009 Posted in Flower Arrangements, Gardening, House and Home, Main Content | 3 Comments »

Flowers make the ideal gift for nearly every occasion. Whether someone has had a baby, celebrated a birthday or lost a loved one, flowers are the ideal gift. The vast range of colors and types that are available means you can literally find something for every occasion. People love to get flowers, too, so that makes them an even better gift. But how did we get started giving flowers? Go to flowers for more information.

In the Beginning
No one knows exactly who gave the first bunch of flowers, but it could easily go as far back as Adam and PosiesEve! Toddlers automatically pick wildflowers to give to their mothers, drawn by the colors and prettiness.
We do know, however, that each culture has used flowers for different reasons. In Ancient Greece, flowers were considered to be property of the gods, making them very special. There are accounts of flowers being given as a gift for many thousands of years. The majority of these would have been flowers that where picked wild, plus a few from the garden.

The Language of Flowers
In Victorian times, flowers were used to express more than just admiration or love. Entire letters could be written with blossoms alone! Each flower has a specific meaning, though the exact meaning depends on a variety of factors, including color and size. For example, a red rose means “passion”, pink means
“romance” and coral colored roses mean “friendship”.

Back in the day, people knew the meanings of all the most common flowers and this made each and every bouquet full of much more meaning. A young man might send a girl a bunch of wildflowers, but it would really be a message in disguise! Even today, some people enjoy learning the meaning of flowers and adding these special flowers to their bouquets. It really adds a whole other dimension to a simple bunch of mixed flowers.

This time period was definitely the most meaningful of all for flower giving. With the extra messages contained in bunches of flowers, it was one of the big gifts of the day.

Modern Flower Giving
Traditionally, men gave flowers to women, but now it’s quite acceptable to give a man a bouquet of more masculine blooms, too. Even children get into the act!
Try giving a little girl a bunch of roses for her birthday or Valentine’s Day,  and you’ll make her day.

These days, it’s quite common and acceptable to do your own floral arranging and give flowers as gifts. We aren’t restricted to simply wild flowers or those available in the garden anymore, either. Now there are tropical blooms and more delicate varieties of flowers available year round. This makes giving flowers a more exciting experience.

With the ability to grow many flowers in hothouses right in country and also the ability to import those that don’t grow well in the greenhouses, your options at the florist are stunning. No longer are we restricted to daisies and roses. Now you can select a delicate orchid, bird of paradise or lily for that special someone. It really opens up the realm of possibilities, thanks to airplanes and special technology.

Another modern convenience is the internet, which lets anyone anywhere in the world buy flowers online and have them delivered to a specific destination. You could easily be in the US and have flowers delivered to your mother in Spain! This turns the art of giving flowers into something so easy to do that you don’t even have to leave your own home or office. Just find a good website and you can send flowers without ever having to set foot in a florist shop. Visit flowers for further information.

Flowers, whether silk flower or fresh flowers are one of the favorite gifts to give and receive, as they convey a warm feeling to the recipient. They always give off a positive impact on a person’s emotions; they give delight due to their fragile beauty, and spell out a powerful symbol of enduring affection and optimism towards life. The flowers are an expression of the heart of the giver that transcends words; they express the exact sentiment that one might find difficult to convey in words.

There are many occasions when Flowers are sent to your friends, relatives and loved ones such as wedding ceremony, birthday, Valentines Day, Mother’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving Day and some other occasions. You can also send flowers to remember special dates, to celebrate new homes and to wish people well with a new job or business.

Flower arrangements are the perfect way to wish happy birthday to a friend or a dear one. You can give your mother a gift of beautiful flowers on Mother’s day for all that she does throughout the year for you. A flower is a symbol of love and you can give a flower bouquet to your girlfriend or spouse on Valentines Day or wedding anniversary. Funeral flowers are also a way to express empathy and condolence. Use wedding flowers to createa wedding flower bouquet and floral arrangement to decorate the church for the service and the reception too. Whatever kind of flowers you get, make certain to put some thought into it. It is best if you do your research, know which flowers are in season and which kinds of flowers go together well in an arrangement, and especially find out what people’s favorite flowers are before you get them flowers as a present.

Aside from being a great present and decoration, a recent study conducted at Rutgers University, the State University of New Jersey, offers scientific proof that flowers do improve our emotional health. First, flowers do provide happiness, surely a necessity for our emotional well-being. Second, the impact of flowers is positive and long-term. Lastly, flowers help to enable connections between people.

Flowers were only available in the flower shop and supermarkets traditionally. These flower shops are loaded with a vast selection of different flowers. You will find exotic flowers such as Anthuriums, soft waxy orchids and breath taking Ostrich Plume Ginger flowers and there will also be Peruvian lilies in a mix of colors arranged next to trays of delphiniums and larkspur flowers. However, the increasing demand for flowers as well as the popularity of the Internet resulted to the existence of online flower shops and websites selling flowers.

These Internet Flower stores generally have interesting selection of flower arrangements and floral bouquet that we can look at before we order. You can see if you would like to purchase tropical flowers like Ostrich Plume Ginger flowers, Lobster claws, or Peruvian Lilies and you can also choose assorted roses, many different orchids, tulips, daisies, asters and many others. You can choose to buy seasonal floral arrangements, special holiday gifts, occasional gifts and even get well flower arrangements. The best way that you can buy flowers online is to see the many flower delivery services online and look for the ones who can provide you with the flowers of your choice. Another alternative is to do your own flower arranging.

It is a good idea to work with a florist when choosing flowers because they are able to show different displays and arrangement that can stimulate ideas, which can turn out to be very unique and in a lot of situations fit into the budget you are working with. A great way to choose a florist is by simple ‘word of mouth’; a florist that creates an impressive floral design usually makes a habit of repeating good work. You can ask family members, friends or co-workers for florist recommendations. You should also ask about affiliations with other florist organizations. Affiliations often mean that certain minimum standards must be met; a florist may have affiliations with organizations such as the Society of American Florists and national wire services such as FTD florists or Teleflora. The umbrella company will then forward your order on to a member florist in your locale.

Floral arrangements are truly a gift to all of us, they are not only beautiful but they are fascinating proofs of how powerful the effect nature has to humans. Send flowers to make your loved ones feel special, send flowers on any occasions or simply send them without any special reason and let the flowers create their magic in the lives of those who are really close to your heart.

My 1st post

November 12th, 2008 Posted in Main Content | No Comments »

Oh dear, what to blog about.  I have not done this before.  Should I talk about the weather?  No, I don’t think people really care to much about that.  Maybe politics.  That could be a really hot subject, but I’m not into it, so its a no.  Maybe I’ll just stick to flowers and flower arranging and once in a while throw in a bit of what it is like to live in the Tennessee mountains.  Yes, that seems to be it!  Flowers, wonderful, beautiful, amazing flowers. So folks looks like you’re going to be stuck with me and my flowers and flower arranging.  If you have any questions or comments just drop me a line.
